Meet & Greet with Jeannette McCurdy at the BirdsEye Play with Veggies Event

Last week the kids and I took a whirlwind trip to NYC to attend the BirdsEye #PlayWithVeggies event. I was looking forward to the event as the topic was “Rewriting the Dinnertime Rules” about fun ways to include more vegetables in your meals. However, the kids were looking forward to meeting Jennette McCurdy.

After getting introduced to Jennette McCurdy, they seemed to have lost their shyness and wanted more time with her. Isabel got up the courage to ask her about her favorite ‘Sam & Cat’ episode, which was not to hard to answer since there has only been 5 episodes to date.

Ben then asked her ‘Do you like your name Jennette or the name Sam better?’

And a final pose….

Naturally, Jennette was not just there to hang with the kids but is working with BirdsEye to promote Nickelodeon’s World Wide Day of Play on September 21, 2013. You can enter to win a trip to NYC on the Birds Eye Facebook page!

Now onto the lessons of the day; Rule #1

The idea here is that the kids pick the menu and the veggies. Naturally, Mom and Dad can guide them or give them a selection to choose from. The kids had fun blind-folding me and having me guess what veggies they were feeding me. Ends up it was a pea-pesto crostini.

Rule #2: Play with the veggies on your plate my friends!

At this station, we literally tossed the corn onto our pizza. Yes, they may end up on the floor, but put the dogs or kids to work picking them off the floor afterwards.

Rule # 3: Celebrate and don’t give up on having your kids try something new. Be patient, it may take many attempts.

At this station, we made a pulled pork sandwich stuffed with veggies and guess what? Both kids dug in after I took a bite, and were surprised at how yummy it was.

Rule #4: There are surprising ways that you can incorporate veggies into your meals!

To demonstrate the idea, we made smoothies and chose both fruits & veggies to toss into the drink. The kids added carrots and corn. They enjoyed the drink but like most kids, they would have preferred to have strained the smoothie first. What is it with kids and texture?

Disclosure: I received a bag with some coupons, a chef’s hat and aprons for attending the event.
