Halloween Candy & Tooth Expansion with Invisalign

Happy Halloween! I have a treat for you today. Actually, it is more of a treat for me because I am officially half-way through my Invisalign aligners (I am a member of the Invisalign Mom Advisory Board. I will be receiving complimentary treatment from Invisalign.)!

No tricking here: I am on tray 14 out of 28 for my upper teeth and more than half-way the 22 trays for my lower teeth. The photo does not even fully show the improvement because I have the attachments on some of the teeth.

Most of the time so far has been focused on ‘expansion’, meaning making more space so that as we can straighten my teeth. If we did not expand to make space, my teeth would not be able to rotate into a straighter position.

In order to make room for the rotating/straightening to occur, we also had to file down some teeth a bit. That is done by using the file and little rotating-thingy (guessing that is not the dental name for the tool) to make the tiny space. Yes, it does make a bit of a fingernails on the chalk board sound during the filing, but it was a quick and painless process.

As far as Halloween is concerned, I am thrilled that I can simply remove the aligners when we get back from trick-or-treating and eat any candy my little willpower-less body desires. With standard braces, there are food and candies that you can’t eat as they could get stuck in or break the brackets or wires. Naturally, I will do an extra extra good job brushing, flossing and rinsing before I put the aligners back in at bedtime.
