Father’s Day 2019 at Dog Watch Café in Mystic Connecticut

Now that I am approved to get out an about more post stem cell transplant, including dining outdoors, we decided to treat my husband to BBQ, or whatever he craved, at Dog Watch Café.

Father’s Day 2019 at Dog Watch Café in Mystic Connecticut

First of all, the décor and ambiance was fantastic: Cute tables and umbrellas spread throughout, and even few areas to entertain yourself: a little kid’s areas with all kinds of plastic tables, chairs, playhouses and various toys. The other area included ‘corn hole’ aka ‘bean bag toss’ and a fire pit that seats eight.

What should we order at Dog Watch Mystic?

To start, we ordered pickle fries (O.M.G) and calamari, which are items we always order if available at a restaurant. We then opted for the following: I ordered the coconut shrimp as I did not have an appetite for anything else (post chemo/stem cell effect); my son ordered a build your own burger, which shouldn’t surprise you as he has anointed himself ‘King of the Cheeseburger’ ; our daughter had the chopped pasta salad, and my husband ordered the beef brisket. Other items that tempted us on the menu included: Truffle Scallops, Mac Attack, and Cornbread Hush Puppies.

Did we enjoy our food?

Let’s start with the most important to me: the pickle fries were out of this world! In fact, we grabbed some more ‘to-go’ this past weekend. I am also obsessed with the dipping sauce, so must ask for or figure out the recipe. The calamari, as described, is tossed in a creamy sauce, but since we prefer crispy calamari, we knew it wouldn’t be our favorite calamari ever, but the flavor was great.

My daughter thought the salad was great, and my son didn’t talk the entire time, and somehow managed to engulf the entire burger and fries after appetizers – teen boys have endless pits for stomachs.

I enjoyed the coconut shrimp, but actually preferred to dip them in the pickle fry sauce rather than the Thai chili sauce that come with the shrimp. In fact, I asked for another side of the pickle fry sauce, and after 8 minutes or so, my husband went to go ask the waitress about the sauce, and it ended up she must not have heard correctly, as she ordered us an entire order of pickle fries. In case you are wondering, the extra order was not on our bill.
